About BenI grew up in Great Falls Virginia which is in Northern Virginia outside of DC. Very small town type of place so when It was time to go to college I moved to Chicago for that big city vibe, and a good music school.I think the first album that I ever purchased was Closer to Home by Grand Funk Railroad. I remember seeing the album cover and liking it and then listening to it non stop. It was a captivating album for a kid in terms of the sounds three guys were making back in 1970. I was a huge fan of soccer and played for about 8 years and always wanted to play for the Spanish LA Liga. But when I got to high school I had to choose between soccer and music and wound up sticking with drum and piano lessons.I think John Fogerty’s live album Premonition. I remember hearing it in my Dad’s truck as a kid and thinking it was Elvis. Later when I started learning drums I would play with that record over and over. Monster drumming from Kenny Aronoff with such a precise internal sense of time and feel. The drum sound was also massive and you could tell from the recording that those guys were playing there hearts out and just having fun. It really shaped the way I play now and I always go back and listen and hear something new every time.I would have to say playing The Studio at Webster Hall in NYC. It was a big deal because my Grandmother use to go dancing there in the 30’s as a kid so it was kinda fun playing there like 75 years later and seeing my family in the audience. So far my favorite venue would have to be Fitzgerald’s out in Berwyn. Its been family owned forever and it has a dive roadside bar feel to it but everyone is so welcoming and the vibe is always incredible there. Its not a huge place but its always thumping and I can remember going to see Dave Alvin there and sneaking in because I wasn’t 21 yet haha.I would love to play The Beacon Theatre in New York. It has such a name to it and some great bands have passed through there. So much history and I love that in a venue.
